Whilst here may be a big focus on the London Olympics and Le Tour for 2012 with growing British success, there are some very exciting developments on horizon of road racing with the addition of a brand new race league in the domestic scene. The Yorkshire Road Race League is being launched to increase the number of races for Elite and First Category cyclists.
It’s Olympic year on our home soil and as British Cycling continues its rise in becoming the dominant force in cycle sport, the Yorkshire road race scene is on the up. The Yorkshire Road Race League (YRRL) is being formed with a series of 7 Elite road races running from April through August around the county with a view to increase the standard of top class racing in the area.
Sheffrec CC, BBM Revolution CC, Rutland CC, Sportscover-Altura RT, Richardson’s CC, York Cycle Works, Dirtwheels CC and Out of the Saddle CC are collaborating to run the league, which is open to any Elite, 1st or 2nd Cat’ cyclist despite of their location. The format is simple; riders can enter events individually but must compete at least five events to qualify for the Yorkshire Road Race League Trophy. Points will be awarded in line with British Cycling National B points banding. The winner of each event will be awarded 60 League points going down to 1 point for twentieth place.
Yorkshire is widely regarded as a breeding ground for talented cyclists with numerous world-class athletes past and present emerging from the notoriously tough training runs that are commonplace.
Elite races began to decline on the domestic calendar in recent years, with athletes opting to remain in the 2nd Category due to the favorable choice of races and reduced travelling commitments. It is hoped that the Yorkshire Road Race League will help combat this by increasing not only the number of events on the calendar, but also the standard of racing and at the same time growing the number of 1st and Elite Category riders in the UK. As the current 2nd Cat’ riders progress up the British Cycling rankings, new 2nd cat riders moving up from 3rd will be able to face less of a leap rather than racing against 2nd cat riders who can compete at Elite level, allowing these riders to learn the race craft required to become the Elite cyclists of the future.
Each YRRL event will be promoted solely by the organising clubs, following the simple commonsense rules set in place by the organisers. Each event will have moderate entry costs and the events will offer prize money event-by-event. The League overall and each individual event will offer prizes for the first placed 1st and 2nd Category rider. The results will be published on www.yorkshireroadraceleague.com where details of each event can be found along with league standings and further League information.
