Go-Ride is British Cycling’s development programme for young people. The programme provides a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport and provides a platform to improve bike handling skills.
In Yorkshire over twenty clubs have signed up to the Go-Ride principles, providing cycling activities for young people in a safe traffic free environment on a regular basis. These clubs all have at least one Cycling Coach qualified to level 2 standard and a Club Welfare Officer who has been trained to look after the best interests of the young people involved. They offer opportunities to ride, regardless of age and ability and opportunities to volunteer so there is something to suit all.
For riders beginning on the competition pathway there is Go-Ride racing. This is British Cycling’s exciting competition programme which helps young riders make the transition from club coaching sessions to inter club and open regional competition such as the White Rose League. Go-Ride Racing events offer entry level, local competition for young cyclists under the age of 16. British Cycling Racing Licences are NOT required and the events are aimed at novice racing cyclists. As riders become more experienced and wish to get involved in more formal competition there are a wealth of opportunities in the region. BMX clubs and Cycle Speedway clubs empower their members to get involved in regional and national competitions in their respective disciplines whilst the White Rose Youth League and the West Riding Track League provide ample opportunities for new competitors to sample the delights of road and track racing. For this they will need British Cycling membership and a racing licence.
The Go-Ride Cycling Clubs in the region are largely run by volunteers who are dedicated to the sport and willingly give up their time to help young people to progress through the sport. Very few of them are paid but despite this clubs strive to achieve the highest standards. Almost half of the Go-Ride clubs in the region have achieved Sport England Clubmark status. Other clubs are working towards this kite mark award. Visit the Clubmark website by clicking here.
