Yorkshire secure overall victory in the road cycling at day two of UK School Games

The track cycling is a separate discipline in the UK School Games, so the slate is wiped clean for the final day of competition.
The Breeze network is British Cycling’s exciting recreation programme to get more women riding a bike. It is about fun, friendly and social bike rides in a local area – led by women for women. Funded by Sport England, Breeze relies on a hugely important group of volunteer champions to make the programme happen. Without their amazing energy, enthusiasm and commitment to get women bike riding, we simply wouldn’t be able to offer these exciting experiences.

We are looking for a number of Breeze champions across England. There is no need to be a cycling expert – just be confident on a bike and keen to help others. We’re looking for enthusiastic people to get involved in the Breeze network and inspire women to get more out of their bike, have fun with friends and get a recognised qualification at the same time.

To become a Breeze champion:

You’ll take part in a fun one day ride leadership course where you’ll have a chance to meet other Breeze champions.
The certificate qualifies you to independently plan, deliver and promote rides to groups of women.
In addition to free training, we will provide you with a Breeze kit, British Cycling Ride membership and plenty of support along the way.
Furthermore, to ensure you’re able to deliver safe bike rides, British Cycling will support you to gain a first aid qualification.
In return we ask champions to deliver on average 12 rides over the year to local women in their area.

The following free, one day courses (8.45am – 5.30pm) are taking place:

Yorkshire
Saturday 9 June – Kirklees
Saturday 23 June – Rotherham

East Midlands
Saturday 26 May – Nottingham
Saturday 23 June – Leicester

66 riders departed the Ruddle Centre for 18 laps of the Stainton circuit near Braithwell in bright but very windy conditions. The annual Sheffrec CC spring road race formed the second round of the newly formed Yorkshire Road Race League. The bunch remained as one until the 3rd lap, when a group of seven riders broke clear and quickly established a lead of 35 seconds over the main bunch. The breakaway riders which included 2011 winner Jamie Shirlow with team mate Tom Bustard of Herbalife Leisure Bikes, Tom Barras, Metaltek – Scott, Dillon Byrne and Alistair Rutherford of Vanillabikes.com, Colin Humprey, Sportscover Altura RT and William Haynes of Blackhawk Bikes soon forged a 52 second lead over the main peloton.

Not content with watching their rivals ride away, local rider Graham Briggs of Team Raleigh – GAC, Tom Murray of Team IG Sigma Sport, RST riders Matt Sumpton and Gunnar Gronlund along with Sportscover Altura Riders Colin Humphrey and Rob Sharman all gave chase and split the peloton into 3 groups. The main bunch were now suffering from the pace and would never see the front of the race again. The wind increased to make for a tough race and the main finishing straight was where the wind really blew hard. The reaction from the chasing group of 10 riders ate into the lead of the breakaway riders and the gap was soon down from 52 seconds to just 31 seconds. With 5 laps to go.

The lead group of riders, who had been working very well together sensed their lead was dropping and attacks came. Vanilla Bikes rider, Dillon Byrne was always first up the windy drag to the finish on several occasions but this constant attacking looked to be threatening the precious gap. With 2 laps to go, the chasing bunch were closing in and were now trailing by 22 seconds. The question amongst the ever increasing crowd at the finish was would they catch the riders who had been away for 15 laps? Sadly for local supporters of Graham Briggs they failed in an attempt to bridge the gap. The winner would come from the original breakaway.

A large crowd gathered and witnessed Alistair Rutherford of Vanillabikes.com lead the charge for the line but was soon swamped by Barras, team mate Byrne and Shirlow. The three up battle for honours was won by Jamie Shirlow, Herbalife Leisure Bikes.com, completing the 62 mile race in just under 2 hours 20 minutes. Dillon Bryne, Vanillabikes.com pushed hard and claimed 2nd over Barras who had to settle for third place. Alistair Rutherford made it a good day for Vanillabikes.com placing 4th with Colin Humprey, Sportscover Altura RT, 4 seconds back with Tommy Bustard, Herbalife Leisure Bikes.com claiming sixth place. William Haynes, Blackhawk Bikes who was also from the original breakaway lost ground on the last lap and came home a creditable 7th. Matt Sumpton, RST Trigon RT and Jack Cutsforth, Herbalife Leisure Bikes.com broke clear of the chase group on the last lap to claim 8th and 9th, 44 seconds behind. A frustrated Briggs claimed 10th place in the group gallop 58 seconds in arrears.

Node 4 Giodana rider Kieran Friend rode to an impressive victory in the Dirt Wheels Spring Classic on the Penny Pot circuit north of Harrogate. Friend, who also claimed victory at Darley Moor on Saturday, was in all the moves until he eventually broke clear with RST Trigon Rider Matt Sumpton with 2 laps to go. Sensing that the bunch would catch the duo the Node 4 Giodana rider attacked on Penny Pot Lane and rode solo for three quarters of a lap to win by just over a minute from Sumpton who too kept clear from the chasing bunch. Local rider Tom Barras claimed 3rd place much to the delight of Dad, Sid who was there supporting the Metaltek Scott rider. The remaining riders came over the line in small groups as the circuit made for some tough racing.

The 3/4 Regional B race saw Roy Sumner of Port Sunlight Wheelers CC going solo for 2 laps but was unfortunately caught by the bunch. The final climb saw Sheffrec CC rider James Allen ride clear of the bunch to claim the win. David Morris, Harrogate Nova CC and Simon Maudsley of RVO Racing rounded off the top 3.
