Ampleforth College is the largest Roman Catholic co-educational boarding independent school in the United Kingdom. It opened in 1802, as a boys’ school, and is run by the Benedictine monks and lay staff of Ampleforth Abbey. This Benedictine Abbey is a working monastery and one of Britain’s top boarding schools. Nestling in a magnificant hillside setting, the venue has traditionally been the race HQ for the Ryedale Grand Prix as well as the start and finish for the annual Ryedale Rumble Sportive. The Championship will use the same run in to the finish as the Sportive with a long uphill drag to the finish that’s ideal for spectators to view the closing miles. View map here.

Spectators will not be allowed to park in Ampleforth Village and will be directed to designated parking areas within the Ampleforth College grounds. Details will be in the Race Programme and there will be signs on the day directing spectators to designated parking areas. Please park where indicated and follow all instructions from our event staff. The venue will be clearly signposted which will be essential to keep the venue traffic running smoothly.

The Abbot, the monastic Community, staff and students are delighted to welcome the British National Championships to our campus grounds. In this Olympic year it is a wonderful opportunity to see  the top British cyclists in action in this usually quiet North Yorkshire valley!  We have worked hard with the organising committee to make the campus a safe environment for all competitors and spectators and are indebted to them for their expert advice and guidance.  It should be an exciting event, but as our campus is home to both our Monastic Community and young students, we would ask that spectators respect their privacy and comply with the requests and directions of the marshals and stewards.  We hope that all our visitors and competitors enjoy the experience and take away fond memories of the Cycling Championships at Ampleforth.

B1257 from the direction of Malton, pass through Hovingham, continue to Oswaldkirk where turn left. Caution on immediate descent at the bottom of which turn right towards Ampleforth.

From the North
Take the A170 from Helmsley, heading towards Thirsk. Take left turn onto B1257 at Sproxton, continue to B1363 ignoring earlier Ampleforth signs. Turn right onto B1363, caution on immediate descent at the bottom of which turn right towards Ampleforth.

From the West (No caravans)
A170 via Sutton Bank, continue to Nelson’s Gate at Sproxton where turn right onto B1257, continue to B1363 ignoring earlier Ampleforth signs. Turn right onto B1363, caution on immediate descent at the bottom of which turn right towards Ampleforth.
